Förstudie: Paddelled nossan

A feasibility study for a paddle route through four municipalities.

About the project

Essunga Municipality is running a collaborative project with Grästorp, Vårgårda and Herrljunga to investigate the possibilities of developing a quality-assured and accessible paddle path in Nossan. The aim is to make the river an attractive place for outdoor activities and sustainable tourism – for both locals and visitors.

Scope of the feasibility study

The work focuses on the stretch between Hudene and the outlet in Dättern. The project group considers this part of the river to be particularly suitable and attractive for paddling. Since the trail runs through several municipalities, two Leader areas share the funding. We, Leader Sjuhärad, support the parts of the preliminary study that concern the paddling stretches in Vårgårda and Herrljunga. At the same time, Leader Nordvästra Skaraborg is funding the work in Essunga and Grästorp.

The project maps out which routes are already functional for paddling and which require measures to become accessible for canoes, kayaks and SUPs. In addition, the group identifies existing docking areas, piers, rest areas and other important features along the entire route. In parallel, the team maps out how the trail can become more inclusive. They are particularly investigating how to make places more accessible for families with children, the elderly and people with disabilities. In this way, better opportunities for outdoor life are created for more people.

Sustainability in focus

An important part of the feasibility study is to analyze how the paddle path may affect the flora and fauna in and around Nossan. Therefore, the project is conducting an environmental risk analysis and proposing a control program – all to ensure that future measures are implemented with consideration for natural values.

Towards a future destination

The aim of the feasibility study is to lay the foundation for a future implementation project. In the long term, Nossan should be able to develop into a well-visited destination for both locals and tourists. A completed paddle trail would not only offer nature experiences, but also contribute to the tourism industry through connections to food experiences, accommodation and cultural events. In addition, there is potential to create synergy effects with other trails in the region, such as the planned cycle trail between Gothenburg and Falköping.

Through this joint initiative, the municipalities want to promote Nossan as a unique place for sustainable experiences, recreation and collaboration.

Cut from the application

”"The feasibility study will give us a clear picture of how we can develop Nossan into an accessible and sustainable canoeing route that strengthens both natural values and the tourism industry."”

The board's decision justification

The feasibility study could lead to Sjuhärad being strengthened with more activities and meeting places, and to increased collaboration between entrepreneurs. It is good that a risk analysis is produced of the impact of paddle tourism on the environment.
