From idea to multi-golf course

At the beginning of the course, Anna-Karin and Patrik greet us. They have been involved since the start and can tell us about the work behind the site and everything that has happened since it was completed. The idea itself was born quite unceremoniously during a meeting on a walk.

Patrik told Anna-Karin about a thought he had been pondering: what if it was possible to create a multi-golf course in Töllsjö? Anna-Karin thought he should write a motion for Töllsjö IF's annual meeting, which would be held shortly thereafter. Said and done – the motion was written and eventually, with the help of a leader project, the idea could become a reality.

The ambition was to create a place for spontaneous movement and community across generational boundaries. A few years later, there is much to suggest that this is indeed what the course has become.

Of the three sports, it is primarily disc golf that has gained momentum. Anna-Karin and Patrik describe the course as a good place even for those who have never held a disc before. The holes are relatively short and the level is just right for those who want to try their hand, while the course also attracts players who already have experience.

Families and youth are among the most frequent visitors. In the evenings, young people bike here to play and socialize, and there are often cars in the parking lot. The visitors come not only from Töllsjö and its surroundings. The word about the course has spread, and players find their way here from places like Borås and Alingsås – and Anna-Karin and Patrik have even met visitors from Estonia and England.

On UDisc, a website and app for disc golfers, players leave appreciative reviews about the course. For Patrik, the feedback means a lot, especially considering all the hours that have been spent building and maintaining the area.

Even around the course itself, things have started to happen. In connection with the inauguration, Vera's café opened, which stays open during the summer. In the summer of 2025, the café provided some youth with summer jobs, and the following year, the operation was complemented with a small flea market.

A course that continues to develop

When we follow out onto the area, it becomes clear how much work lies behind the course. Well-manicured grass areas are interspersed with trees and groves, pathways have been arranged, and stones that came up during the ground work have been used in small cairns and walls. This makes the course, despite all the work that has been put in, feel like a natural part of the surroundings.

– It has turned out so nice! I didn't think there would be so much space, says Anna-Karin.

The maintenance is adapted to how the course is used. If many discs end up in a certain place, underbrush and grass are cleared to make it easier for the players. That Patrik lives right next door also makes it easy for him to notice what needs to be fixed and what could be developed.

Right now, the association is working on three new holes for disc golf that they hope will be ready by spring 2027. Baskets and tees have been donated from the disc golf course in Bollebygd, which needs to downsize due to a school construction, and the equipment thus gets new life in Töllsjö. One of the new holes will go down a slope and over a stream, with several trees to navigate along the way.

Many hands behind the result

Behind the finished result are many hours of volunteer work, but also people and actors in the community who have contributed what they could. A local entrepreneur has, among other things, lent a larger excavator and fill materials have been brought to the area when needed. When a safety net was to be set up along the path, the fire brigade stepped in and also took the opportunity to make the work a step exercise.

Patrik himself has spent countless hours in the area. At the same time, he does not seem to see all the hours in the excavator as a major sacrifice. He enjoys being there and can, at least to some extent, consider the work as relaxation.

And they are not finished. In addition to the three new disc golf holes, the association wants to find a good solution for lending equipment, continue the work with sponsorship, and reach out to even more. For this to be possible, more people who want to engage are needed above all.

When Anna-Karin and Patrik look back on the leader project, it is not the actual work on the course that stands out as the biggest uphill battle. Instead, it was the application and project finances that tested them.

– We work voluntarily alongside other things, why should it be so complicated? We just want to do something good!

During the process, they received support and encouragement from the leader office, but to others who are considering starting a project, they gladly send along a piece of advice: make sure the project group has the right competencies from the start, not least someone who feels secure with the finances. Today, they can laugh at some of the twists and share them with a twinkle in their eye.

When we leave the area, the course remains as the result of all that – the idea during the walk, the exercise to the annual meeting, the leader project, and all the hours of volunteer work. Here, young people hang out in the evenings, families try a new activity, and visitors from outside have a reason to find their way to Töllsjö.

For Patrik, however, the most important thing seems to be something much simpler. When he is asked what means the most, he returns to those who actually use the place:

– I am happy about what everyone who plays says. It feels in the heart.
