Development of a community museum in Tranemo local history park
Tranemo local history association has created a new community museum in the local history park – a meeting place that reflects the history of the region and invites people across generations.
About the project
On the upper floor of the old grain warehouse, the association has set up a museum with four different environments: shoemaking, woodworking, older iron production, and ancient remains and communications. The work was largely based on existing collections from both the warehouse and Järpesbo.
To make the house more accessible, a new staircase was built that blends into the historic environment. The lighting was modernized, both in the museum and on the ground floor, where four older oil paintings were given a prominent place together with newly produced stories for visitors. The kitchen and toilets were supplemented with furniture that allows the premises to be used most of the year.
Outside the warehouse, the entire local history park received new weatherproof signs and a large orientation board at the entrance. An information folder was also produced to spread knowledge about the park and the museum.
Tranemo Local History Association:
”The museum has become a meeting place where history, crafts and stories bring people together – and where both residents and visitors can discover new sides of Tranemo.”
Commitment and collaboration
The project was carried out with great non-profit commitment – a full 525 hours were spent on planning, building stands and stairs, signage and inauguration. The association also collaborated with schools, companies and professionals to collect materials and create the exhibitions.
Results
The museum was inaugurated on August 25, 2024 with music, speeches and many visitors on site. The investment has given Tranemo a new cultural tourism destination that attracts both residents and visitors. Schools use the museum as a learning environment and the association has gained new opportunities to organize meetings, cultural cafes and events that extend the season.
The project has also received attention outside the municipality. In 2024, the association was awarded two cultural prizes, and Tranemo Municipality was shortly thereafter named the 2025 Cultural Municipality in Sweden – where the work of the local community association has been an important part.
The board's decision justification
The project strengthens and develops the local history park as an existing meeting place for all ages and stakeholders in society. The local history park with the new exhibition is strategically located on the tourist route and strengthens the attractiveness of the municipality and Sjuhärad. The exhibition highlights, preserves and makes the history of the area accessible to visitors and especially students.
