The water in the school and the School Stream

Lygnern's water council has driven the concept ”Water in School” with a focus on a holistic approach to water and the environment. The association Sportfiskarna, on the other hand, has worked with the material ”School Stream” focusing on practical measures to help the fish. In this project, the water council has collaborated with Sportfiskarna and developed educational material where the respective expertise and knowledge of the associations are utilized.  

The project The water in the school and the School Stream has developed a concept for water education where students get to know their school-related water environments through practical work. Together with the schools, a teacher's guide and educational material have been produced, as well as a website, informational film, and maps of educational water environments.

During the project, 43 outdoor activities were conducted with about 500 students in grades 2–6 at four schools in Borås, Bollebygd, and Mark. The students have, among other things, investigated life in the water and carried out concrete habitat conservation measures at five watercourses. In addition, 11 teacher training sessions were conducted to provide the schools with knowledge and tools to continue the work.

The project has also created new collaborations between schools, the water council, municipalities, fishery management areas, and landowners. To create sustainability, a financing concept with local support partners has been developed. Five companies had joined by the end of the project, providing funding for about four outdoor activity days with school classes per year. The work continues after the project's end, and new water days are already planned.
